Monique initially moved from Jamaica to Japan many years ago to work as an English Teacher on the prestigious JET Programme. Japan was never in her plans after university but a professor convinced her that she had too much untapped potential and she needed to see the rest of the world before continuing her studies.
After arriving in Japan , Monique was sent to what she calls 'Little Jamaica' on the island of Shikoku, a beautiful city called Kochi. While teaching at a prominent high school in the city , Monique joined a band for the fun of it and it was there that she sang her first Japanese song - Shiroi Kobota by Shiina Ringo.
After spending two years in Kochi City , Monique relocated to Tokyo to continue teaching but soon found herself singing for fun at friends' events and events organized by the Jamaican community. She met the right person and soon went on to tour as a back vocalist for Atsushi who is the leader of one of Japan's most famous boy bands - Exile . She also started recording vocals for commercials and singing at weddings.
Since singing wasn't in the plans and she had never been vocally trained , Monique had to buckle down to learn songs and work on her vocals at home for about a year.
After about two years of singing around Tokyo, Monique was invited to appear on the very first edition of Nihon TV's Nodojiman ZA World which is a TV show where foreigners sing Japanese songs. Monique, although never actually winning the show (but always appearing in the top 3) made 8 appearances on the show over a two year period.
Once the TV show had ended, she started to release her own original music with the first being a Reggae single called 'Look of Love'. She then released a Reggae- Jazzy version of Robert Flack's ' Feel like making Love' which led her IVY Records under label Warner Music Japan, where she recorded an all Japanese Cover album and finally had her major debut in Japan . Her debut album entitled 'Love Songs Sweet J Ballads' is a cover album of famous Japanese female artists and singers.
Monique then went on to release her EP called 'Singles Collection'.
Monique's vocal and musical style can best be described as a mix of Jazz , Rock and Soul. She is currently performing with her band , Big Band Reggae style and touring Asia with the cruise lines as a Guest Entertainer.
